Tom Swift and His Aerial Warship; Or The Naval Terror of the Seas Appleton Victor 9781318728985 Books
I’ve been rather disappointed in Tom Swift of late. He’s portrayed as an unimpeachable good guy. Generally, a rather one dimensional figure but a good role model for a young reader. Unfortunately, two of the last three books have focused on military weapons including a “Great Searchlight” for monitoring the border and a “Giant Cannon” for blowing stuff up. You could even argue that Tom Swift’s “Photo Telephone” could be a surveillance device but I’ll give him a pass on that one. What I won’t give him a pass on is his latest invention, his “Aerial Warship”. Tom Swift could create any invention he wants but he CHOOSES to create weapons of war. Swift does explain that he does not condone war and violence but feels compelled to create weapons in response to what was going on in Europe. This book was published in 1915, just two years before World War II, and it wasn’t like Americans didn’t see the war coming. I still find it disappointing that Tom seems so eager to create weapons of destruction.Tom Swift wants to create an Aerial Warship but the big problem he faces is the recoil of the cannons throwing off the vehicles flight. Even Tom’s own father doesn’t believe he can succeed this time. Ouch. As with almost every Tom Swift novel, their compound is invaded and this time the perpetrators set fire to one of their buildings. The mystery is who started the fire. Could it be French operatives or possibly a country they dare not name (I presume it will be Germany)?
So, it turned out the saboteurs were actually from a variety of countries led by a Frenchman. Here is the main problem with this story. It’s dull. There is nothing here we haven’t seen in 90% of the Tom Swift stories and I didn’t even understand the mechanisms by which Tom solved the recoil problem. The whole series is getting incredibly repetitive and boring with each book barely distinguishing itself from the prior. Hopefully, the next one is improvement but this one was just a big nothing.

Tom Swift and His Aerial Warship; Or The Naval Terror of the Seas Appleton Victor 9781318728985 Books Reviews
If there ever was a time for a hero who is all about being independent, hard working, loyal yet willing to go his own way, smart, brave, polite, and adventurous it was during the poor economic times in America's history. This books were written and read during the depression, and were not just an escape from the reality of the day, they were so popular because they demonstrated that self reliance and not government was the key to success. Tom Swift, the hero, is often asked to 'sell out', give up his rights, inventions, patents, etc, but he does not. While he is very often looking for wealth, its BIG wealth, not nickels and dimes. Tom shows the way to success in a BIG way, and not to settle for crumbs.
His books inspired entrepreneurs of the day, and some later, such as Steve Wozniak co-founder of Apple. Isaac Asimov was inspired by the Swift novels, and he himself was also hard working and very prolific, like Tom. Hard work is one of the secrets of success.
If you want to feed your brain some great inspirational stories, and you like either adventure, inventions and tinkering, or you are seeking to be free of a boss, and want to work for yourself, I can't think of a better set of books to read.
These are just as good for teens as adults. I'm in my 50's and value this sort of inspiration, and while it's not going to win a price for prose, the stories inspire me to work harder for myself, and my family, and not for a B.O.S.S.
Somebody wanting to take advantage of the fact that this book is public domain has copy/pasted the original public domain text, then uploaded it to . This means that any images will be of inconsistent quality or missing altogether, the print quality may be impacted negatively, and there are likely layout and editing errors due to the copy/paste process.
If you buy the kindle version, you are paying money for what you could get for free on Project Gutenberg, and more importantly, you are supporting what amounts to a thief who is charging money for someone Else's work.
If you buy the print version, make sure it's from a reputable publisher, and not "Createspace" or " Digital" because you'll just be getting the printed copy of the copy/paste kindle version, which will likely be terrible. Generally, you will want the mass market paperback, or possibly the hardback version.
When releases an official kindle version of a public domain book, it's always free.
Appears that e-books can only be read online. Since I don't have Internet access at home, then it's useless.
It would be nice if the description mentioned that, or more clearly if it already does.
Very glad this book was offered for sale. It is a series read during childhood but had gotten misplaced so was glad to buy it for a Christmas gift. It is a treaure!
I remember something of Tom Swift growing up in Wisconsin . Either in books or Television, whichever it was I still love a good adventure ,and well written books indeed . Bill Jones C.S.T.
great reading
This book takes a lot of time meandering around and not getting into the action. It is a Tom Swift story, and the reader knows that means a lot of Mr. Damon's annoying blessings, but to read Tom Swift one must go beyond that. It is interesting to take a look at pre-World War One America. Obviously the writer felt there was a good chance America would be in that sooner or later. Do not make this your first Tom Swift story You won't want to read any more of them, and some of them are quite good, if one considers the era in time and the targetted audience.
